Troop 5020, sponsored by LUCHA Ministries, is bilingual and bicultural, made up of girls from immigrant families. These girls have little direct contact with older relatives because their extended families live in other countries. Troop members have painted pumpkins, provided gifts, and given handmade cards to nursing home residents, who they call the abuelos (grandparents).
One resident recalled being a Girl Scout in her younger days. “I love these girls and the way they relate to us! They’re so special,” she said.
“Thank you, God, for helping these young Latinas maintain their cultural values through service to persons who often feel lonely and forgotten. Thank you for the blessing they all receive, young and old, through these relationships.”
