Mission Bite #184: Positive Crisis

I just returned from Juarez, Mexico, where on behalf of our non-profit, The Off Ramp, I took a tour of shelters for asylum seekers in and around Juarez, across the Rio Grande from El Paso. Opportunities abound, but there is work to do!

There was laughter. There were tears. There were questions. There was deep appreciation. There was wonder. From children who had not been warm in weeks yet smiled and played, to an 80-year-old woman huddled under blankets yet rising to greet us, our hearts were touched by the situation these forcibly displaced people endured. Still, we were encouraged!

As Enrique Valenzuela put it, "This is not a crisis! We just need to all come together and figure out how we can handle the situation." To think crisis is to think negatively. These people thought in the positive, bringing to the table all the assets of each organization and individual. Result? Dignity and care for the forcibly displaced.

Crisis positive

Acabo de regresar de Juárez, donde, en nombre de nuestra organización sin fines de lucro: “The Off Ramp”, hice un recorrido por los refugios para solicitantes de asilo en Juárez, México y sus alrededores. Viajé a través del Río Grande desde El Paso. ¡Cuanto trabajo por hacer y cuántas oportunidades de servicio!

Encontré risas, lágrimas, agradecimiento, asombro. Me conmovieron niños que estaban con frío por semanas y que sonreían y jugaban con una mujer de ochenta años acurrucada debajo las mantas y aún así se levantaban para saludarnos. Mi corazón se conmovió por la situación que estas personas desplazadas por la fuerza han soportado. ¡Y aún así, ellos nos fueron de ánimo!

Así lo expresó Enrique Valenzuela: “¡Esto no es una crisis! Solo necesitamos unirnos y descubrir cómo podemos manejar la situación”. La sola palabra crisis trae pensamiento negativo a nuestra mente. Pero estas personas piensan positivamente al traer todo lo que tienen y lo que son a la mesa de la cooperación. ¿Resultado? Dignidad y cuidado de aquellos que han sido desplazados por la fuerza.
