Mission Bite #244: Trusting God & Moving Forward

For the past 11 years mobile clinics have been conducted in 3 consistent locations. One of those locations is called Norgaisse. The clinic is done in cooperation with the local baptist church at Norgaisse using their building for the clinic.  In addition to consultation clinics in family medicine, a blood pressure program has been run to help folks have better consistent control of their blood pressure. At regular intervals, patients with hypertension come for check ups and to receive their medication for the next period.

In the midst of one of these blood pressure clinics one of our long time patients revealed she had been diagnosed with breast cancer and would be able to receive treatment at a cancer treatment center in Port Au Prince but she neither had the funds to cover the cost of the treatment or travel. Port Au Prince is approximately 40 miles east of Grand Goâve but takes approximately 2 hours by private vehicle to reach. For many folks public transportation in the form of a van or “taptap” (small pickup trucks with a cover on the back and benches) is the only option and it can increase the travel time by twice.

The healthcare costs in Haiti is significantly less than in the US but there is also no insurance to help with any of the expenses. Cancer treatment and chemotherapy, while not expensive by our standards is out of the realm of possibility for many Haitians living in the countryside, like the mountain community of Norgaisse.

So as God places an opportunity in front of us, we follow obediently. Madam Silfanie accompanied by her daughter was transported for treatments, consultations, lab and x-ray appointments with the cost covered. She completed all 6 cycles of chemotherapy with little difficulty and was in preparation for surgery. Sadly with travel delays due to the insecurity in Haiti, her disease progressed and she lost her battle with cancer. During the entire time of treatment, all the hours in traffic and treatment, labs and exams - never once did this sweet lady complain or question. She simply trusted God and moved forward with what was next. Her calm strength and presence will always be an inspiration.

Durante los últimos once años, las clínicas móviles se han llevado a cabo en tres lugares permanentes. Uno de esos sitios se llama Norgaisse. La clínica se realiza en cooperación con la iglesia bautista del lugar; se utiliza el edificio de la iglesia para la clínica. Además de las clínicas de consulta en medicina familiar, se ha llevado a cabo un programa sobre presión arterial para ayudar a las personas a tener controlada su presión arterial. A intervalos regulares, los pacientes con hipertensión vienen a chequeos y a recibir su medicación para el próximo período.

Durante una de estas clínicas de presión arterial, una de nuestras pacientes desde hace mucho tiempo reveló que le habían diagnosticado cáncer de mama, y que podría recibir tratamiento en un centro de tratamiento del cáncer en Puerto Príncipe, pero que carecía de los fondos para cubrir el costo del tratamiento y el viaje. Puerto Príncipe está aproximadamente a cuarenta millas al este de Grand Goave, pero se tarda aproximadamente dos horas en llegar en vehículo privado. Para muchas personas, el transporte público en una camioneta o "taptap" (camionetas pequeñas con una cubierta en la parte trasera y bancos) es la única opción y puede aumentar el tiempo de un viaje al doble.

Los costos de atención médica en Haití son significativamente menores que en los EE. UU., pero no existe un seguro médico que ayude con ninguno de los gastos. El tratamiento del cáncer y la quimioterapia, aunque no son costosos para los estándares estadounidenses, están fuera del alcance de la posibilidad de muchos haitianos que viven en el campo, como la comunidad montañosa de Norgaisse.

Entonces, cuando Dios nos pone frente a nosotros una oportunidad para ayudar, la tomamos y seguimos obedientemente. Madam Silfanie acompañada de su hija fue transportada para sus tratamientos, consultas, citas de laboratorio y radiografías con el costo cubierto. Completó los seis ciclos de quimioterapia con poca dificultad y se estaba preparando para la cirugía. Lamentablemente, con los retrasos en los viajes debido a la inseguridad en Haití, su enfermedad progresó y perdió la batalla contra el cáncer. Durante todo el tiempo del tratamiento, todas las horas de tráfico, laboratorios y exámenes, esta dulce dama nunca se quejó o cuestionó. Ella simplemente confió en Dios y siguió adelante con lo que vendría después. Su fuerza, tranquilidad y su presencia siempre serán una inspiración.
