About 15 years ago, we knew a young Afghan woman names Zakia. In fact, we hosted a baby shower when she had her first child.  Zakia moved away and has returned to the Bay Area and just recently reconnect with us. Now she has four children! The baby for whom we hosted the shower is now a big teenage girl. Zakia and her husband are struggling financially

because she isn’t able to work due to a leg injury and her husband is an Uber driver. It’s very difficult for them to manage on just one (unpredictable) salary here in the San Francisco Bay Area.

They live in a tiny apartment in Oakland. When we came to visit we brought with us a large order of groceries with lots of good meats, fruits and vegetables, rice, milk and eggs – enough food to last at least two weeks. Food insecurity is a big challenge for Afghan refugee families and I wish we could do more!
