CBF field personnel Scarlette Jasper met Joe* the first year she was involved with the White Flag Winter Relief ministry at First Baptist Church Corbin.
Joe was experiencing homelessness; he had a lot of trauma as a child and suffered from anxiety and depression. As a young child, Joe witnessed his mother kill his father. Later, his mother committed suicide. Over the years, Jasper worked with Joe and assisted him with applying for SSI benefits. He was turned down multiple times. Jasper continued to advocate and help build a case for Joe. A few months ago, they went for another SSI review. They were praying that this time he would get approved.
Last week, Jasper received a call from Joe. He was crying. He had received his SSI approval letter in the mail. He thanked her for all the time that she had helped him fill out applications and took him to appointments. But mostly, he wanted to thank her for praying for him all of these years. Joe now has the resources to be able to have stable housing and continue to get the medical care that he needs. If it was not for Jasper’s long-term presence as CBF field personnel, she would not have been able to walk that journey with Joe.
