I have heard so many people ask this question this past year and I’ve asked the question myself, “What can I do?”
The words of Mother Teresa have played like a recording in my mind, “Help one.”
Mother Teresa’s quote is a bit longer. “One. One. One. Just begin one at a time…”

Another of her quotes along these lines:
“Never worry about numbers. Help one person at a time and always start with the person nearest you.”

During this season, I have seen people reaching out instead of remaining stuck in inaction due to the enormity of all the chaos around them.
One. One. One. Just begin one at a time:

  • Checking in with one immigrant family.
  • Buying groceries for one family that has lost some or all their SNAP benefits.
  • Attending a first protest.
  • Calling one congress person.
  • Teaching or assisting with one English class a week.
  • Witnessing and reporting on one person being questioned or detained by ICE or CBP.
  • Praying for one person by name that is in detention.

We can make a difference with ONE. Thank YOU for being that person making a difference in the lives of your community. You have encouraged those around you to act too.

If you really keep the royal law found in Scripture, “Love your neighbor as yourself,” you are doing right. James 2:8
